Original surf music from Byron Bay - is 'Mal and the Longboarders'. This group of fun loving, surf nuts have been playing, writing and recording their music for well over a decade now. Inspired by their combined love of surfing (yes, they all surf!), the band has recorded 4 CD's, all independent productions, reflecting a definite Aussie take on longboarding specifically, but also surfing in general. 'The Other Side' is the title of their latest collaboration (released in September 2008), the most expansive expression to date, drawing on a variety of musical influences, surf, love and lifestyle inspired lyrics - revealing the creative development of the band.
NEWS FLASH
Mal & the Longboarders have been invited to play at the 'Dukes OceanFest' in Hawaii, August 2010. The boys are stoked, out of their minds, not only for the sheer honor of playing in Hawaii, but of course to make the pilgrimage to the hallowed waves of these legendary islands.
This great event (named after the great Duke Kahnamanoku) is held at Wakiki beach over 6 days and encompasses all the 'waterman' sports including surfing, ocean swim and stand-up paddle board. Surfers from across the spectrum - professional and amateur, young and old love to come to the home of surfing to help celebrate and experience the true 'aloha' spirit.
Prior to the Hawaiian trip, Donno is spending a couple of weeks down at Crescent Head brushing up his skills on short & long equipment, Mal is 'warming-up' with a quick trip to Bali, while the rest of the boys will be getting as much wave-time in and around Byron as they can- (don't want to be out of nick when we hit the waves over there!) The band is playing the week before departure at the Lennox Head Hotel on the 7th August (in conjunction with the annual Lennox Head Longboard comp) - this gig is always a rage and on this occasion the band should be 'going-off'. |
